Scorrier & Chacewater District Horse Show

Saturday, 14 May 2016

The annual Scorrier and Chacewater District Horse Show & Gymkhana is held at Higher Callestick Farm, Penhallow, Truro TR4 9NG by the kind permission of Mr J Trenerry. Please note that the date for this year’s show has been brought forward, as it usually occurs in June.

Scorrier and Chacewater was originally two shows – and combined at the end of the 1980’s. They have been on their present ground for some 20 years now. The show is affiliated to the British Showjumping Association, and runs 4 rings – one for British Showjumping, one for unaffiliated jumping, one for showing of horses and ponies, and the fourth is for fun classes and gymkhana – the Handy Pony is always popular.

The show likes to make a donation to local charities, the Cornwall Air Ambulance has been a recent one for a few years.

There is a First Aid Paramedic on site. Please note £1 surcharge to each competitor for First Aid.

Great British Beef Week

Get ready for the Great British Beef Week! This annual event usually takes place around the 23rd of April – which just also happens to be St George’s Day.

What could be more British and a Sunday joint of roast beef with all the trimmings? It could be argued that the humble sandwich is just as quintessentially British, and on a Monday morning if you were to tuck tasty morsels of beef left over from the Sunday Roast, between two slabs of crusty bread, that would be a reasonable contender for the title!

The key focus of the GBBW campaign this year, is how to get more from your meat by celebrating the humble sandwich – and in doing so, the campaign also hopes to raise awareness of the quality and versatility of assured British beef and give the industry a much-needed boost.

Organised by Ladies in Beef, Great British Beef Week puts the spotlight firmly on the fantastic food that British beef farmers produce. What are the Prospects for Small Farms?

The Prince’s Countryside Fund

The Prince’s Countryside Fund was established by the Prince of Wales in 2010 and exists to improve the prospects of family farm businesses and the quality of rural life. Every year, the Fund provides more than £1m in grants to nationwide projects that help provide a secure future for the countryside. The Fund also commissions research into issues affecting families and rural communities.

Working with the University of Exeter

The Fund is concerned about the future viability of small family farms. Together with the University of Exeter, the Fund is working on a research project to identify the key factors that help small farms survive. The outcome of the research is to improve the prospects of family farms, and show how farmers can improve their performance through increased efficiency, added value, diversification, co-operation and succession planning.

How you can help

In the first instance, the research team is asking for submissions of written evidence on the following questions:

What do small farms contribute to the agricultural sector, the rural economy and communities, and the countryside which is distinctive and important in comparison to larger farms?
How might a viable and vibrant small farm sector be encouraged and supported? This might include: the use of CAP measures, the operation of supply chains, taxation rules, tenure legislation, access to finance, and practices around succession and new entrants.
How might small farmers improve performance and viability through, for example, increased efficiency, added value, diversification, and co-operation?
We would also be grateful to receive any evidence detailing examples of ‘good practice’ where small farm businesses have thrived and where lessons might be learned for the sector as whole.

Based on the responses, you may then be asked to attend workshops being held with other interested parties.

Free Farm Advice & Coffee Mornings

Coffee morning initiative launched to support farming community

Cornish Mutual has launched a new coffee morning initiative as part of a year-long commitment to support rural charity the Farming Community Network (FCN).

The first three of theses events will be held in the week beginning Monday the 18th of April, and will focus on sharing hints and tips on how to make farm business administration easier, and less time consuming.

The coffee mornings are free to attend with participants encouraged to donate to the FCN through a tea and cake stall and a raffle. Cornish Mutual have pledged to match all funds raised up to £100.

The pressures of farm administration was a specific area of concern that was raised by farmers who attended Cornish Mutual’s health and safety events last year.

Alan Goddard, Managing Director for Cornish Mutual said: “The FCN is a very important charity which addresses issues which are often not discussed openly in the farming community. People can face a variety of pressures when running a farm, be it financial or personal, it can be a very stressful lifestyle, especially at the moment when we know farmers across the Westcountry are finding it hard.

“The FCN offers practical help and advice to farmers and their families in times of need enabling them to talk through problems and where possible find solutions. The coffee morning initiative is a great way to raise funds for the FCN and bring people together. We also know that the free advice will be very welcome.”

The first three coffee mornings will take place on:

Monday 18 April – Lobbs Farm Shop, Heligan, St Austell. Speakers include Canon Chris Batt, speaking on behalf of the FCN, and Peter Green, accountant and farmer, who will talk about ways to improve how you work on and in your farm business.

Wednesday 20 April – Ullacombe Farm Shop and Café, Bovey Tracey. Speakers include Stephen Dennis, speaking on behalf of the FCN, and a talk about how to handle your book-keeping so it benefits your farm business.

Wednesday 27 April – Darts Farm, Exeter. Speakers include Joanne Jones, speaking on behalf of the FCN, and a talk about how to handle your book-keeping so it benefits your farm business.
